On a generous 350-acre estate in County Mayo, Ashford Castle overlooks the beautiful shores of Lough Corrib, Ireland’s second-largest and naturally-formed lake. Located only 30 miles north of Galway City, it offers a peaceful and private haven without being too far removed from the city’s cultural offerings.

A regal location and centuries of history

The history of the castle dates back to early 1228 when the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family constructed the original fortress. Over the centuries, it passed through various noble hands, including generations of the Bingham, Oranmore and Browne families. However, a significant transformation occurred in the 19th century under the ownership of Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness (of the renowned brewing dynasty) who expanded the castle and added the Victorian extensions that contribute to its current impressive facade.

Later in 1939, it was converted into a hotel, quickly establishing itself as a favoured destination for notable visitors, including royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities from across the world. After gaining worldwide notoriety, the castle and its grounds then went on to serve as a prominent backdrop for the classic 1952 film The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

Outdoor pursuits and local traditions

But beyond its vast beauty and history, the vast 350-acre Ashford Estate provides an abundance of opportunities to engage in local traditions and outdoor pursuits. One such example is falconry. The estate is home to Ireland’s oldest school of this art, providing guests with a chance to connect with majestic birds of prey led by their experienced handlers.

Guests can also partake in something that harks back to the castle’s earliest roots – the traditional sport of archery. Situated within the estate’s grounds, this activity provides an opportunity to learn or practice under the guidance of skilled instructors. Here, participants utilise recurve bows and aim at target faces set at varying distances, offering an engaging outdoor experience amongst the Irish countryside.

Alternatively, for those seeking an exploration of the local Irish surroundings, private kayaking tours on Lough Corrib are available from the months of May to September. These guided excursions offer a chance to discover the sheer vastness of the estate and experience a new view of the castle, this time from the water’s edge.
